Historic Travels US - Exploring the Wild West DVD

|
The absorbing films that make up this DVD carry an undeniable charm. Seldom is the mesmerizing beauty of Utah’s desert highlighted as emphatically as you will witness on this unique DVD.
What nature held back in terms of fertility from the state of Utah, it more than compensated for by endowing this desert state with abundant and mesmerizing natural beauty. One only has to visit the enchanting Bryce Canyon National Park to get a glimpse of the magnificence of the state.
Spread over 37,277 acres of scenic colorful rock formations and desert wonderland, the park attracts millions of tourists each year. Few, if any, return untouched by the marvelous beauty of the Park.
Centuries of erosion have shaped colorful Claron limestone, sandstone and mudstone into thousands of spires, fins, pinnacles and mazes. Collectively called "hoodoos," these unique formations are whimsically arranged and tinted with colors too numerous and subtle to name. The Paiutes who lived in the region when Euro-Americans arrived in southern Utah believed that the "hoodoos" were "Legend People" who were turned to stone by Coyote.
|
It was the Paiutes, living throughout the area, which greeted explorers Captain Clarence E. Dutton and John Wesley Powell in the 1870's. Many of today's place names come from this time. For example, Dutton's report gave the name Pink Cliffs to the Claron Formation. Other names - Paunsaugunt, place or home of the beavers; Paria, muddy water of elk water; Panguitch, water or fish; and Yovimpa, point of pines - were derived from the Paiute language. Congress created Bryce National Monument in 1923. In 1928, Bryce Canyon was designated Bryce Canyon National Park.
This DVD is a compilation of fascinating travelogues of the states of Utah and Arizona.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:
"I am yet to examine a document or a pictorial record, which pays as rich a tribute to the matchless beauty of the desert in Utah and Arizona, as does the fascinating compilation of films.
Sponsored by an automobile manufacturer (Ford Motors) an airline (TWA) and a railroad company (The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad), the three films on view carry a subtle promotional undertone, which is not surprising. I don’t think these commercial establishments could have thought of a better way of popularizing their services, than producing this breathtaking footage of some of the most fascinating landscapes in the country.
While the footage in Kodachrome mesmerizes you with the brilliant hues of mountains and waterways, the use of black and white footage in two of the clips has a bewitching influence. The rugged charm of the unusual landscape is further accentuated by the delicate light and shadow patterns formed by sunlight striking incredible rock formations.
An edifying tour of the copper mines in Brigham and some charming tourist resorts in Albuquerque and other parts of Arizona round off the travelogue, but not before convincing you that Arizona and Utah are the paces to be in if you are someone who is an avid traveler and admirer of nature."
