Historic Travels US - Silent History of San Francisco DVD
|
|
Welcome to San Francisco! This is a city on the march - restless, eager and vibrant. Witness the unending action in this Jewel City, that has, for decades, defied disasters - both man-made and those of nature!
The turn of the 20th century witnessed a renewed sense of optimism among Californians who were bouncing back from the economic depression of the 1890s. One wonderful aspect of the era was the multitude of grandiose schemes for the development of California. San Franciscans, too, were caught up in this upbeat mood and were soon busy building roads and railways. The earthquake of 1906 reduced the city to a pile of debris, but did little to dampen the spirit of die-hard San Franciscans. There was really never a dull moment in this Jewel city. Between political scandals and strikes, amidst earthquakes and fires, the city marched on.

This unique DVD captures a glimpse of life in San Francisco and portrays the never-say-die attitude of its brave and progressive citizens.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:
"It isn’t without reason that San Francisco is called the jewel city. Brimming with allurements and opportunities, the city has been home to millions who were fortunate to enjoy its charms. Beneath this glitter and glamour, however, is a strong will and determination that the people of this great Californian city have exhibited down the ages in their endeavor to excel in every sphere of life.
This rare DVD captures the essence of this grit and resolve of San Franciscans in a fascinating manner. Beginning with heart-rending shots of the aftermath of the great earthquake, the clips provide an insightful pictorial journey through the city, showcasing the many activities that made up a day in the life of the great city.
The restlessness and persistence of people in their demand for justice is evidenced in the clips which capture two of the many strikes that the city witnessed in an era when labor was yet to be protected by laws. The fun loving spirit of the people is also seen in the shots of parades and recreational activities, while other clips provide a peek into the frenzied pace at which the city was progressing in terms of modernization. The Colacico clips offer a rare insight into the lives of San Franciscans at the turn of the 20th century and are reminiscent of the relaxed lifestyles that people enjoyed at the time.
The fact that some of the clips are the handiwork of amateurs is apparent in the enthusiasm for things a professional may overlook. The clips of the China Clippers are a good example of this. The sheer delight of flying over the great city is captured with child-like enthusiasm, which gives the clip a rare intensity. A fascinating choice of subjects and great use of the camera ensures that the lack of narration is seldom experienced
This DVD provides a great insight into the life of San Francisco and explains why millions found it difficult to resist her charms."
CUSTOMER'S REVIEWS:
"I was delighted to see the determination and iron will of San Franciscans in the clips on this DVD. To get on with life despite tragedies and difficulties takes a lot of courage and we San Franciscans have shown that we are never short of this virtue. The efforts of the government at rebuilding the city are commendable as well. I strongly recommend this set of DVDs to anybody who may be struggling with challenges in life. I have no doubt that they will end up being inspired!"

"As an amateur pilot, I have flown a lot of small and medium sized aircraft and I was delighted to see the clips on the Pan American Clippers. Although I am yet to pilot one of these planes, I figured from this DVD that its going to be an enjoyable experience when I do get the chance to fly this beautiful bird. Thanks a2zcds for this wonderful insight into the lives of San Franciscans during the early part of the 20th century."
