In 1935, at the height of the great depression, a group of New York businessmen decided to create an international exposition, to lift the city's sagging spirits. Several countries took part in the exposition creating one of the biggest international events of the time. Roughly 200,000 people attended the grand opening of the fair on April 30, 1939. This thematic and amazingly futuristic extravaganza was aptly called the "World of Tomorrow". One of the most famous exhibits was a time capsule, which was not to be opened until 4000 years later in A.D.5939. Sealed in this invaluable capsule were writings by Albert Einstein and Thomas Mann. The "Amusements Area", with its roller coaster, parachute jumps, a collection of performing midgets, and shows with women in revealing costumes remained the most popular display.

EDITORIAL REVIEW :
The New York World's Fair of 1939 was named "The World of Tomorrow" and these DVDs helped me to understand why. The exposition was a fitting tribute to the admirable vision and foresight of the people of post-depression New York. Beautiful photography makes up for the lack of narration. An eye for detail is also evident in some of clips. The DVDs take you on a whirlwind tour of the fair. Clips featuring amusement rides, magic shows, Hollywood doubles, zoological wonders, swimming shows, dancers and a host of other sideshows held my mind captive for quite a while.
One of the displays that caught my eye was Salvador Dali's "Dreams of Venus" walk-through funhouse. There is a marvelous footage of a parachute drop and the famous Glen Gary Band. Judicious selection of films makes this set of DVDs both thematic and entertaining.
CUSTOMER'S REVIEWS :
"These dynamic DVDs provide an exhaustive view of The New York World's Fair of 1939 and some personal glimpses into the activities that went on at the fair. I can't recollect seeing any other documentation that presents the fair in as much detail as this one. There are a lot of sideshows such as the dancers, pararachute drops and parades which help in catching the excitement of the fair. The clips have been well preserved and the absence of narration is hardly noticed because of the vivid picturization. I am sure all collectors of historic DVDs will want to purchase this delightfully pictorial record of an event that New York will always remember with pride."

"It was almost like being there in person- in New York at the "World of Tomorrow" Fair .The clips on these DVDs are loaded with an amazing number of activities that went on at the fair - especially those pertaining to the amusement areas. Perhaps, a few visuals of the actual dispalys at the pavilions would have helped in understanding the theme of the fair a little better, but you can't miss the excitement of the event none the less."
