Historic Travels US - New York - The Evolution of a Metropolis (2-DVD Set)

A2zcds.com presents a comprehensive overview of the history, commerce, trade and traditions that have made New York one of the most endearing cities in the country, in this fascinating 2-DVD set. This surely is a must have set of DVDs for all history buffs and New York lovers!

Strategically located on the Eastern Atlantic Coast, and blessed with a topography that includes one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York was the preferred port of destination for thousands who chose to migrate to the promise of a prosperous future in the United States.

Driven by circumstances - war in Europe, famines and poverty in the orient - and by the lure of opulence, immigrants from around the globe flocked to the United states in ships of all descriptions and landed, for most part, in the emerging metropolis that was renamed New York by the British and quickly dubbed Gateway to the New World by one and all.

The five boroughs that make up the metropolis are separated by various waterways. Brooklyn and Queens occupy the western portion of Long Island, while Staten Island and Manhattan are completely on their own land mass and Bronx, to the north, remains attached to the New York State mainland.

Few people are aware of the fact that this throbbing and vibrant city was for a brief period (1789-90), the national capital. By 1797, endless waves of fortune seekers had made New York the largest city in the U.S.

New York continues to grow - both in size and status as the one of the world's most alluring cities. A2zcds presents a graphic portrayal of the city's charms and a delightful peek at its history, in this unique 2-DVD set.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:

"Absolutely stunning!" is how I would describe this absorbing 2-DVD set which focuses on one of the world's most captivating cities - New York. Part travelogue and part commentary on the city's rich history, culture and commerce, the clips on this fabulous set have been handpicked with a purpose - to enthrall and to educate, and I, for one, was impressed on both counts.

Produced by some of the leading names from the middle of the 20th century, - Joseph Burstyn Inc., Simmel Meservey and Associated films - these clips bear the stamp of authority and professional handling. You see New York as a vibrant city, always on the go, from its earliest days. The clip on Manhattan (Manhattan Landmarks) conveys unequivocally, the city's determination to keep up with times in terms of technology and citizen-convenience. The tearing down of the EL, may have sparked of quite a debate in those days! "Story of a City, New York" covers the history of New York comprehensively, and offers a fresh perspective on the city's charms.

For me, the clip on the construction of the World Trade Center is the icing on the cake and a befitting tribute to the men who dreamed, designed and built these monumental towers, which for many years symbolized America's supremacy in World Trade. Sadly, these towers no longer grace the New York skyline.

Few other cities grab you as does New York, and these fascinating DVDs explain why. History buffs and New York lovers, rejoice! Here is a fitting tribute to the city everybody loves - on DVD!"

CUSTOMER'S REVIEWS:

"Having never visited the pulsating metropolis (New York), I always associated it with towering skyscrapers, dark and narrow streets (dwarfed by the skyscrapers), crowds and hotdog stands. These DVDs were an eye-opener, and I now see what millions did - that New York is more than a collection of concrete monuments - it is an enigma that needs to be experience first hand to be understood and cherished. Hey hang on; I've got to call my travel agent, and no prizes for guessing where my wife and I are headed this summer! Its NY ofcourse!"
