A fair, aptly called "A Century of Progress International Exposition" was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Chicago. Its theme was to demonstrate to an international audience the nature and significance of scientific discoveries. Several personalities left a mark on the exposition, but one name that will always stand out is that of Sally Rand of the fan dance fame. In addition to the lively footage on the Chicago Fair, this DVD includes some great pictures of the famous 1939 Fair held in New York. The Seattle World's Fair, the third fair shown in this DVD, ran from 21 April to 21 October 1962. It featured several themed areas. There was the world of Science; The World of Century 21, which was an excellent exhibit, that gave the fairgoer a glimpse of what the 21st century would be like; World of Commerce and industry, a showcase of technology advances from some of the country's greatest corporations; World of Art; World of Entertainment; and the Food circus. The Space Needle, a towering 605-foot tall landmark designed by Edward Carlson still stands today.

EDITORIAL REVIEW :

This compilation of vintage films presents an interesting look at the fairs hosted by three American cities- Chicago (1933), New York (1939) and Seattle (1962). Amazingly, all three fairs lay emphasis on one theme - progress.

The first two films on this interesting DVD take you on a tour of Chicago city and the exhibition grounds. You will see some of the pavilions like the Chrysler Motors pavilion, and other buildings that were a part of the fair. People in interesting costumes are also seen. Although these clips do not contain shots of the insides of pavilions, they provide a good "feel" of what it was like to be at the fairs. The movie set shown in one of the films, I am told, was a big crowd puller. You will see some of the sights from the 1939 New York exhibition in a film shot by an amateur. The film "21st Century Calling" presents an enchanting tour of the 1964 fair in Seattle. This professionally made film captures one amazing display after another, as a young couple romps wide-eyed through the exhibition. Rides on monorails, foreign visitors, fabulous scientific displays and a visit to the amusement park leave the two spellbound.

To sum it up, the clips on this DVD are entertaining, informative and educational.

CUSTOMER'S REVIEWS :

"I must thank you for the enchanting hour that I spent watching the clips on this DVD. The most exciting moment for me was when I saw the Sky Needle. I can see the top of the tower from my office window and was delighted to see this landmark on film. This is the DVD to watch for an authentic account of the Seattle Fair of 1962 and the other two fairs at New York and Chicago."
